What are the most valuable pieces of memorabilia in the world?
The sports memorabilia business has proven to be a very lucrative one. Given the scarcity of certain items - be it a game-worn jersey for a famous game or a rare sports card - the prices that they can be sold for verge on the astronomical.
And boy howdy have some particularly special pieces of sports memorabilia sold for mind-boggling sums that have reached the eight digits! So what exactly are the most valuable pieces of sports memorabilia in the world?
Unsurprisingly, items from the G.O.A.T. himself, Michael Jordan, feature prominently on the list of extremely expensive pieces of sports memorabilia.
Jordan’s game-worn jersey for Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals went to auction in September 2022 and was sold for an eye-popping $10.091 million, making it the most expensive sports jersey ever sold. And that was for a jersey that Jordan wore in a loss, so imagine how much his Game 6 jersey - which he wore when he hit “The Shot” - would fetch!
Other items that belonged to Jordan also grew in value, especially after the popularity of “The Last Dance” documentary. A Jordan trading card that had his autograph as well as a patch from his 1997-98 All-Star Game jersey sold for $2.7 million, while a pair of game-worn shoes, the Nike Air Ships, during his rookie season sold for $1.47 million.
But the price of Jordan’s most expensive jersey and trading card combined doesn’t even equal the most expensive trading card ever sold. That record belongs to a mint condition 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, which sold for an incredible $12.6 million, making it the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia to date.
The Mantle card very nearly doubled the $7.25 million price tag that a T206 Honus Wagner card, one of the most coveted trading cards in history, sold for. Meanwhile, trading cards of modern-day greats like LeBron James, Patrick Mahomes, and Tom Brady have also gone for multiple millions of dollars.
But while the majority of sports fans will never come close to getting their hands on these valuable pieces of memorabilia worth millions of dollars, they do have the ability to purchase affordable pieces of memorabilia available at Fan Arch.
